Attila fled, and the city was saved, thanks to a woman whom chroniclers described as a witch. In 1613, a poem described her as ‘without saddle or whip, badly clothed, half naked and with flying hair, with outstretched arms, thin and old, Almost like a witch’.16 When the gate-towers were renovated and repainted early in the seventeenth century, her image was included on the Franciscans' gate, a remnant of the original city wall which by the sixteenth century stood in the middle of the town, and Latin gold lettering explained the story so there could be no mistake.17

7.2 This eighteenth-century engraving of the Franciscans’ Gate clearly shows that it was ornamented with pictures although the image of the hag faced outwards and so cannot be seen here. Sigmund Grimm, Simon Grimm: Barfüsser Tor und Turm, Kunstsammlungen und Museen Augsburg, G. 10515.
